Abstrak
the title of this research is “Modality in Kompas Editorial Text Issued on October 2018”. The research aimed to describe the kinds of modalities, to reveal the meaning, and also the distribution of modalities in Kompas editorial text issued on October 2018. This study uses descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research was taken from sentence excerptions of editorial discourse that containing some meaning of the kinds of modality. The results shows that there are one hundred and twelve data having four kinds of modality, they are intentional modality, epistemic modality, deontic modality, and dynamic modality. Three data having more than one modality also found. The most dominant modality is epistemic modality. This is logical because epistemic modalities question the speaker’s attitude based on belief or lack of confidence in the truth of the proposition. This is also in accordance with the basic editorial concept which contains the assumptions (uncertain truth) of the author as the speaker about the nonactual events that occur. In sequence, the deontic modality, then intentional modality, and the last is dinamic modality.
