Artificial Intelligence Policy

Acta Pharmaciae Indonesia supports the responsible and fair use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance research quality, uphold editorial independence, and maintain the integrity of the scientific record. Transparent declaration of AI use builds trust and confidence by clarifying its application within a manuscript. These policies establish a consistent, risk-assessment framework for AI use across the research and publishing lifecycle, applied to authors, peer reviewers, and editors, while recognizing their distinct roles.

We believe AI serves as a valuable supporting technology. It can enhance the clarity, efficiency, and exploration processes during manuscript development, but it must not be used for determining conclusions or evaluations. Accountability, evaluation, revision, and editorial decisions remain human responsibilities and cannot be delegated to AI systems.  AI can be utilized for tasks such as interpretation, framing, emphasis, or evaluative judgment, provided it remains under human control, oversight, and verification.

Authors are permitted to use AI tools to assist in various aspects of manuscript writing, including but not limited to:
• Translation, structuring, or clarifying reviewer comments.
• Strengthening and refining language, and reinforcing grammar.
• Suggesting manuscript structure or formatting.
• Data cleaning and deduplication.
• Generating images for improved data presentation (AI-generated images must be validated by the author and reviewer).
• Reference management: AI tools can assist in managing citations, formatting references, and creating bibliography lists.

While AI tools can be beneficial in many manuscript preparation tasks, their use is not permitted in certain areas:
• Delegating editorial or author responsibilities to AI (including peer review).
• Generating opaque or non-verifiable output.
• Breaching confidentiality or consent.
• Generating hypotheses, analyses, and conclusions from data, or presenting them as human-derived language/normalization (these must be written by the author).
• Fabricating data, citations, or results.
• Generating core reasoning without disclosure.
• Creating and using photorealistic images (deepfakes).

Authors must adhere to ethical guidelines and academic integrity standards when using AI tools in manuscript preparation. Any AI-based content generation that violates copyright, plagiarizes others' work, or engages in unethical practices will be considered a breach of publication ethics. Authors who choose to use AI tools in manuscript preparation are advised to:
• Verify AI-generated content: Authors must carefully review and validate any content generated or suggested by AI tools. The responsibility for the accuracy and quality of the manuscript remains with the authors.
• Transparent disclosure: Authors must transparently disclose the use of AI tools in the manuscript submission process. This includes mentioning any AI-based tools used for language editing, plagiarism checking, or data analysis in the acknowledgments section.

As generative AI technologies and scholarly publishing standards continue to evolve, Acta Pharmaciae Indonesia reserves the right to periodically review and update this policy. Authors, reviewers, and editors are responsible for consulting the most recent version of the policy available on the journal website.
