Food Security Education through Hydroponic Co-curricular Activities in the Kurikulum Merdeka as Sustainable Education
Abstract
This research aims to describe the implementation of co-curricular activities with the theme of sustainable lifestyles through hydroponics as an effort in food security education. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with eleventh-grade students at SMA Katolik Karitas III Surabaya as the research subjects. Data were collected through document studies, including co-curricular modules, project reports, daily monitoring, and assessment rubrics. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research results show that co-curricular activities through hydroponics can foster values of collaboration and creativity, although the achievement of critical reasoning dimensions still needs to be improved. Students showed active involvement in designing, maintaining, and harvesting hydroponic plants, which impacted the improvement of their understanding of the concept of food security. This activity also strengthens food literacy through hands-on practice and exploration of environmentally friendly vegetable cultivation technology. In addition, this co-curricular activity promotes a sustainable lifestyle, such as upcycling used materials, water conservation, and waste reduction. Research results show that hydroponic co-curricular activities are relevant to sustainable development goals or SDGs, especially SDG 4 and SDG 12. Schools play an important role as real learning spaces and agents of sustainable lifestyle change for students. Thus, co-curricular activities not only serve as a means of contextual learning but also strengthen character, 21st-century skills, and concern for food and environmental issues.
