Abstract

This study investigates the theme of marine environmental degradation caused by human actions as depicted in Royyan Julian’s poetry collection Biografi Tubuh Nabi. The primary objective is to identify and describe poems that critically portray human destructiveness toward marine ecosystems. Utilizing a qualitative approach, this research employs close reading as a method of textual analysis. The data were interpreted through Greg Garrard’s ecocritical framework, focusing on thematic categories such as pollution, apocalypse, and dwelling. The analysis reveals that the selected poems not only portray the suffering of the ocean caused by anthropogenic actions, but also offer sharp critiques of the social, political, and moral systems that neglect ecological balance in favor of economic and political interests. The findings underscore the poet’s use of diction, metaphor, and symbolism as a means of articulating environmental concerns. This research concludes that the ocean should not be viewed as a dumping ground or an inexhaustible resource for exploitation, but as a living entity that must be respected, protected, and valued within both literary and ecological discourse.
