UTILIZING THE ALUMINUM CONTAINED IN USED BOTTLE CAPS TO MAKE ALUM

Abstract

Used bottle caps are inorganic waste that still have benefits because they contain 75.51% aluminum metal. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out research to reuse aluminum metal. The research aimed to determine the concentration of KOH, H2SO4, temperature, time, and weight of used bottle caps to obtain the maximum alum weight.  Alum is made by reacting aluminum with KOH  at  a certain temperature and time. Next, the filtrate is cooled to room temperature, then H2SO4 is added to form alum crystals. The alum crystals were washed with 70% ethanol, then dried in an oven at 75℃, cooled in a desiccator, and then weighed. To obtain the maximum weight of alum, variations in KOH,   and H2SO4 concentrations, temperature, time, and weight of used bottle caps were carried out. A used bottle cap weighing 3.0081 grams was reacted using 50 mL of 15% KOH and 30 mL of 7 mol/Liter H2SO4, a heating time of 10 minutes at a temperature of 80℃ resulting in a maximum alum weight of 39.5963 grams. The function of alum is as a coagulant to precipitate pollutants in wastewater to produce clean water.
