Stylistic Features in Sapardi Djoko Damono’s Poetry Anthology Hujan Bulan Juni and Their Relevance as Teaching Materials for Middle School
Abstract
This study aims to describe the forms of stylistic devices and their meanings in Sapardi Djoko Damono’s anthology Hujan Bulan Juni and to analyze their relevance as teaching materials for literature at the junior high school level. The scope of the study focuses on six aspects of stylistic features: phonetic style (phonemes), lexical style (diction), syntactic style (syntax), discourse style, figurative language, and imagery. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using a document analysis method. The research data consist of excerpts of lines and stanzas of poetry that represent these six aspects of stylistic features. Data analysis was conducted through heuristic and hermeneutic readings, referencing stylistic theory and the criteria for selecting literary teaching materials according to Rahmanto (1988), which include linguistic, psychological, and cultural background aspects. The results indicate that the stylistic features in the anthology form an aesthetic character that is simple, reflective, and rich in meaning. The use of concrete diction, uncomplicated sentence structures, and communicative figures of speech demonstrates the accessibility of the language for junior high school students. An interesting finding in this study is that the simplicity of the language actually serves as an aesthetic and pedagogical strength, as it conveys depth of meaning while remaining consistent with the criteria for literary teaching materials in junior high school.
