Indonesia dan Malaysia sering dianggap sebagai negara serumpun. Pandangan tersebut
berpengaruh terhadap hubungan antara dua negara yang banyak dibentuk oleh diskursus-diskursus
identitas. Seringkali dalam proses pengambilan kebijakan, para elit politik dipengaruhi oleh
“ikatan kekerabatan” antara kedua negara. Namun sejarah membuktikan bahwa pertimbangan
geostrategis sangat memengaruhi hubungan Indonesia-Malaysia di masa lampau. Tulisan ini akan
membahas mengenai hubungan kedua negara di masa lampau jika dipandang dari sudut pandang
geostrategis, serta bagaimana prospek hubungan Indonesia-Malaysia di era Poros Maritim.
Argumentasi utama tulisan ini adalah hubungan Indonesia-Malaysia tidak hanya digerakkan oleh
faktor-faktor identitas, tetapi juga oleh faktor geostrategis. Jika selama ini hubungan keduanya
seringkali diterjemahkan sebagai hasil dari politisasi kebudayaan, tulisan ini lebih menekankan
pada faktor-faktor strategis di mana Selat Malaka menjadi salah satu center of gravity-nya. Tulisan
ini akan dibagi menjadi empat bagian. Pertama akan membahas hubungan Indonesia-Malaysia dari
perspektif identitas. Bagian kedua membahas sejarah hubungan Indonesia-Malaysia dari perspektif
historis dengan menitik beratkan pada aspek geostrategisnya. Sedangkan bagian ketiga akan
membahas hubungan Indonesia-Malaysia kontemporer dengan penekanan pada visi Indonesia
sebagai poros maritim. Bagian keempat adalah kesimpulan.

Abstract
Indonesia and Malaysia are often considered as kins. The perspective has been influencing the
relationship between the two which has been shaped by identity discourse. In the decision making
process, political elite are often influenced by the ‘kinship bound’ between two countries. History,
however, proved that geostrategic considerations determined the relationship of the two
significantly in the past. This article aims to discuss the Indonesia-Malaysia relationship in the past
from geostrategic perspective, and to discuss how are the prospects of the relationship in the
Maritime Axis era. This article argues, the relationshi between Indonesia and Malaysia is not only
determined by identity factors, but also geostrategic ones. Most scholars think that the
relationship of the two are the result of culture politicization, but the author sees that geostrategic
factors, which is Malaka as one of the center of gravity, are very determinant. This article is
devided into four section. The first section will discuss the Indonesia-Malaysia relationship from
the identity perspective. The second one talks about the history of the two with an emphasis on
geostrategic aspects. The third section discusses contemporary Indonesia-Malaysia relationship
with an emphasis on Indonesia vision as maritime axis. The last part is the conlusion of the article.
