Antioxidant Cream Formulation of Ethanolic Extract from Avocado Leaves (Persea americana Mill.)

Abstract

Avocado leaves (Persea americana Mill.) was known contain flavonoids that have
antioxidant activity. This study aimed to determine the effect of tween 80 and span 80 on
the physical properties and stability of cream ethanolic extract from avocado leaves and
to know the antioxidant activity by DPPH radical scavenging activity. Cream formula
preparation was done by comparing the emulsifiers concentration tween 80 and span 80
were Formula 1 (75%:25%), Formula 2 (85%:15%) and Formula 3 (95%:5%). Cream
was tested the physical properties and stability. The best formula that qualified in
physical properties and stability during storage for 28 days was examined antioxidant
activity by DPPH method. The results showed that increasing concentrations of tween 80
and decreasing concentration of span 80 would increase viscosity and adhesion but
decrease the dispersive power. The best formula was Formula 3 with viscosity range
25220-43960 cp, dispersive power range 4.90 to 5.50 cm, adhesion range 1.41 to 4.65
seconds and DPPH radical scavenging activity was 69.33%
